Preparing to Travel
Before a student goes abroad, it is recommended that families discuss the following topics:
- Finances: Discuss access to money while abroad, budget, tuition payments, loan papers, credit cards and local currency.
- Health: Make sure the student is familiar with any medications needed while abroad. Discuss any special medical conditions and how to use/obtain health insurance while overseas.
- Contact Information: Know how to contact the site director or host institution (UK's Office of International Affairs for international students and families.) Get contact information for the student's residence abroad, as well as the closest Consulate or Embassy.
- Travel Itineraries: Students and their families should have copies of the student's itinerary, passport and travel contact information.
Families of students traveling to the University of Kentucky are also encouraged to visit the Prospective Students section of this Web site. Additional information is available on the university's resource page for parents.
