Travel Abroad & Re-Entry: F-1 Students

Visa Validity
The F-1 visa is issued by a US consulate or embassy. Since the visa is for entry purpose only, it does not need to be renewed while in the US. However, if you leave the US temporarily (with the intention of returning to school), you must be sure you possess a valid visa. If you do not have one, you must obtain a new one at the US consulate or embassy in the foreign country you are visiting. Due to a possible security check under the Visa Mantis clearance, make adequate plans for potential delays. Your security clearance is valid for the length of the approved academic program, to a maximum of 4 years. The clearance will cease to be valid if you change academic programs.

There is a difference between having an F-1 visa and being in F-1 visa status. You are given F-1 status upon entry to the US with an F-1 visa. The visa allows you to enter; your status is maintained by compliance with Immigration regulations (i.e. full-time enrollment, I-20, etc.)

I-20 Certification Signature for Re-entry to US
There is a section on page 3 of your I-20 which is reserved for the signature of the DSO. This signature confirms that you are in legal F-1 status and are a continuing student at UK. It is valid for one year and is needed for re-entry to the US. To receive the DSO's signature, you must complete a Travel Request and supporting documents to 215 Bradley Hall two weeks prior to your travel.

Passport Validity
It is important that your passport be valid at all times. Make plans to renew it 6 months prior to its expiration. Addresses and telephone numbers for foreign consulates can be found at: www.embassyworld.com. Make sure that you follow carefully the instructions noted on the webpage of your consulate. Keep in mind that to enter the US, your passport must be valid for a minimum of 6 months into the future.

National Security Entry/Exit Registration System (NSEERS) Students Only
If your passport and I-94 card were marked with an NSEERS FIN (Fingerprint ID Number) upon entry to the US, be sure to follow the exit/entry procedure as outlined on the instructions you were given.
