Health Insurance Requirements
All students, scholars, dependents and ESL students must have health insurance that meets the university’s minimum health insurance criteria.

Health Insurance for International Students
The following groups are automatically enrolled in UK’s Aetna Student Health Insurance Plan each time they register for classes:
- F-1 students
- J-1 students
- J-2 students
For these groups, there is no paperwork or enrollment form to complete. The fee for this insurance plan is applied directly to your student bill. Students who already have insurance meeting the university’s minimum criteria may be eligible for a waiver.
Waiving Aetna Student Health Insurance
If you have another health insurance policy that meets UK’s minimum criteria, you may be eligible for a waiver of the Aetna coverage and fee. Waiving the Aetna Student Health Insurance will remove the International Health Insurance Fee from your student bill and will withdraw you from the insurance policy.
New students must request a waiver between September 1 and 22 for the fall semester and between February 1 and 22 for the spring semester. Returning students can request a waiver between August 3 and September 22 for the fall semester.To complete a waiver, do the following:
- Make sure that your current policy meets UK’s minimum health insurance requirements.
- Gather the needed documentation.
- Your UK Student ID Number (Your UK Student ID Number is available on your UK Student ID card or in myUK. Social Security Numbers and Temporary Social Security Numbers will not allow you access to the site.)
- Your current health insurance plan ID card
- Your current health insurance plan brochure or plan description
- Access the Aetna Web site and apply for a waiver.
NOTE: You will only be allowed one attempt to access the site.
- Go to www.aetnastudenthealth.com.
- Enter "University of Kentucky" under "Find Your School" at the top of the page.
- Select "Plans & Products Offered to You" on the left side of the page.
- Select "International Students & Scholars" from the menu that appears.
- Read the waiver instructions.
- Fill in the application.
Please allow 10-14 days to allow changes to be reflected in your myUK online statement. If the waiver is accepted, the fee will be removed before late fees are assessed.
Important Dates and Deadlines Regarding Insurance Waivers
- New students cannot use the site until September 1 for the fall semester. You must allow time for your new information to be uploaded into the system.
- All students must complete the online waiver before September 22 for the fall semester. The site will close at this time.
- Returning students should complete the online waiver before the Student Billing payment deadline to avoid late fees.
Insurance for Scholars, Dependents and ESL Students
The following groups must prove that their existing policy meets UK's minimum criteria or elect to enroll in an equivalent insurance plan such as the Aetna Student Insurance Plan:
- J-1 visiting scholars
- English as a Second Language (ESL) students
- Dependents of international students and/or scholars
