J-1 Status
The J-1 (exchange visitor nonimmigrant) visa category is a result of the Exchange Visitor Program, which was created by the Fulbright-Hayes Act of 1961 to “increase mutual understanding between the people of other countries by means of educational and cultural exchanges.” All exchanges visitors are expected to return to their home country upon completion of their program in order to share their exchange experiences. For information, see the U.S. State Department's Exchange Visitor Welcome Brochure, and visit http://j1visa.state.gov or http://exchanges.state.gov/jexchanges/faq.html#1.
Individuals must be pre-approved to participate in exchange visitor programs in the United States. Before applying at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate, you must first meet the requirements and be accepted for one of the Exchange Visitor Program categories through a designated sponsoring organization -- in this case, the University of Kentucky. Once you are accepted as a participant in an exchange program, the university will provide you with the information and documentation necessary to apply for the J-1 visa to enter the United States.
A responsible officer (RO) and multiple alternate responsible officers (AROs) have been appointment by the University of Kentucky and approved by the Department of State to advise and provide the necessary documentation.
