Who are J-1 Scholars?

J-1 scholars are also called Exchange Visitors because they have been selected by an exchange visitor program sponsor (namely, the University of Kentucky) to participate in research, teaching, lecturing, observing or consulting. They are termed “visitors” because they have residence in a foreign country to which they plan to return.

J-1 status includes different categories that allow for employment opportunities.  In addition, participants in the J-1 Exchange Visitor Program are allowed to come based on other funding sources:  personal, government, and international organizations such as the Fulbright Commission.

Below is a brief summary of scholar categories approved by the Exchange Visitor Program for the University of Kentucky.

Research Scholar and/or Professor:  This category is intended for individuals who come primarily to conduct research, teach or lecture.  Under most circumstances, they are allowed to remain in the US for a maximum period of 5 years.

Short Term Scholar:  This is intended for individuals who will be here a maximum duration of six months to conduct research, to teach or observe.  There can be no extensions granted beyond six months.

Specialist:  This is an expert in the field of a specialized knowledge or skill who comes for the purpose of observing, consulting or demonstrating his or her expertise (i.e. artist, athlete, visiting coach). The duration of this category is one year with no possibility of an extension.

Processing Fees

As of July 1, 2009, the Office of International Affairs charges a fee for the processing of a DS-2019 Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor (J-1) Status for all categories, except J-1 Students. The fee may be paid either by the department or the J-1 Exchange Visitor, but payment must be processed through a JV.  (Note: Fees cannot be charged to grants.) The fee scale for the categories listed above is as follows:

$100  Initial DS-2019
$75    Extension of DS-2019

This fee policy is in alignment with the practice of benchmark institutions, and has been approved by the UK Board of Trustees; it reflects the increased administrative supervision required by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

For Newly Arriving Scholars

After arrival, it is necessary for you to report to the Scholar's Office, 211 Bradley Hall, for SEVIS (Student & Exchange Visitor) validation. Please call Marc Invergo, 257.4067 ext. 240 for an appointment or e-mail him at marc.invergo@uky.edu. Failure to report can result in the automatic cancelation of your status.

All new scholars attend a mandatory (and enjoyable) orientation to learn about regulations governing the J-1 visa status as well as places of interest in the Lexington area. It is an opportunity to ask questions and to meet other researchers new to the University of Kentucky. The date of this orientation will be given to you at the time of your SEVIS validation.
