Taxes
The UK Office of International Affairs and the Graduate School have purchased CINTAX tax preparation software for use by UK international students and scholars only.
CINTAX passwords and instructions are e-mailed to all F-1 and J-1 students/scholars via their UK e-mail addresses in March. Students should verify their e-mail address at myUK and/or make sure the UK e-mail account is being forwarded to another chosen e-mail address that is checked frequently. These e-mails are sent regularly throughout tax season.
Any student receiving a fellowship/assistantship will receive an additional form, 1042-S, from UK Payroll beginning March 15. Students with a fellowship/assistantship must wait to receive this form before filing taxes.
NOTE: Contact the CINTAX support center at support@cintax.us with any questions or issued regarding CINTAX. The UK Office of International Affairs is NOT qualified to give tax advice and, therefore, will not do so.
Other assistance is available through the Student Government Association/UK College of Law Income Tax Clinic. There students can receive assistance with filling out the correct forms, understanding exemptions and filing paperwork. It is recommended international students use the CINTAX program first and then have the completed forms reviewed at the Clinic.
Additional information is available through the Internal Revenue Service.
Legal Matters
While in the U.S., students are subject to American laws and regulations. They are also protected by these laws like all American citizens. As non-immigrants, students must comply with immigration regulations that govern their stay in the U.S. Failure to comply with these regulations could lead to the interruption of their studies and deportation.
Arrest & Detention: In the event of arrest or detention, foreign nationals are entitled, by virtue of bilateral treaties, when applicable, and by virtue of the Vienna Convention, to request that their Consulates or Embassies be notified of this event without delay. Subject to local laws and regulations regarding access to detained persons, Consular Officers have the right to visit their imprisoned or detained countrymen and arrange for their legal representation.
Law enforcement authorities are required by virtue of the above mentioned bilateral agreements to notify the Consulates and Embassies of these nationals in the event of their arrest or confinement. This notification must take place regardless of the wishes of the foreign nationals in question. The nationals themselves must also be informed of this notification.
Legal Service On Campus: The Student Government Association retains an attorney to provide counsel to students. This service is provided free of charge. To make an appointment, go to 120 Student Center or call 257.3191.
Legal Service Off Campus: If it is necessary to select an attorney for representation in court or otherwise, call the Kentucky Lawyer Referral Service toll free at 1.800.899.4529.
NOTE: Students with any immigration problems are advised to consult with the Immigration Specialists in Bradley Hall before contacting a lawyer. The problem may be solved without the help of a lawyer; however, if the case does require legal services, the Immigration Specialist can assist in locating an immigration attorney.
Alcohol Sales: No one under the age of 21 is allowed to buy alcohol in Kentucky. It is against the law to purchase alcohol on behalf of anyone under the age of 21.
