KGS celebrates arrival of new director, Bill Haneberg

KGS staff gathered this morning (Sept. 2) to welcome a new KGS director and state geologist, Bill Haneberg. (See more about Haneberg’s background here.) Haneberg officially became the 13th Kentucky state geologist on Sept. 1.

	Haneberg’s predecessor, Jim Cobb, began the morning with a history of the Survey and its directors. Cobb served as KGS director and 12th state geologist for 14 years until his retirement in 2014. He also passed on to Haneberg an unofficial "state geologist’s hammer."
Interim Director Jerry Weisenfluh talked about the Survey’s accomplishments during the past year and gave out service pins to recognize staff who have worked with the Survey for as long as 40 years. He also thanked the staff for supporting him during his time as interim director.
	Haneberg told the Survey staff he will have an "open door" policy as director. He talked about his career as a consultant and some of the projects he has been involved in around the world, as well as his personal interests.
