KGS Publication Wins National Award

A booklet on geologic mapping for the average citizen published by the Kentucky Geological Survey at the University of Kentucky has received a national award from the Geological Society of America

The 2003 publication, Geologic Maps and Geologic Issues in Kentucky: A Citizen's Guide , has been awarded GSA's John C. Frye Memorial Award. It is given annually to the best environmental geology publication from GSA or a state geological survey. Publications from the preceding three years are judged for the annual honor.

The award, which includes a $1,000 prize, will be presented at the Association of American State Geologists annual meeting, June 11 – 15 in St. Charles , Illinois.

The 27-page full-color booklet's authors include Carol Ruthven, John Kiefer, Steve Greb, and Drew Andrews. It was developed when geologic mapping gained much attention with passage of the national Cooperative Geologic Mapping Act. Many people are not familiar with geologic mapping and its uses, and the Citizen's Guide was published to fill this gap. It explains the types of maps, map scales, and map applications, from geologic hazards to mineral resource maps useful for various industries.

John Frye, for whom this award is named, was active in the Association of American State Geologists and was director of two state geological surveys.

The Citizen's Guide is available from the KGS Public Information Center for $5.00 by calling (859) 257-3896 or toll-free (877) 778-7827, or visit us at Room 124, Mining and Mineral Resources Building, University of Kentucky.
