Cobb honored by Decatur, Il. public school system
Jim Cobb, State Geologist and Director of the Kentucky Geological Survey, was recently honored as an outstanding alumnus by the Decatur Public Schools Foundation of Decatur, Illinois.
Jim attended Decatur public schools, graduating from high school in 1966. He was cited for his scientific work on coal and for writing the chapter on coal for the World Book Encyclopedia and the Encyclopedia of Appalachia. He recently co-authored a report for Congress by the National Research Council on the future of coal. His first work as a professional geologist was drilling water wells in the Sahara Desert creating the world’s largest desert irrigation project. These wells are still in use and can be seen from space and on Google Earth because of the green crop circles from pivot irrigation contrasted against the desert sand. Dr, Cobb has been state geologist of Kentucky for 9 years and at the University of Kentucky for 28 years.
