Four researchers from the China Earthquake Administration will visit Kentucky between September 5 and 13.
It will be the second time this year that a Chinese research group will visit the Kentucky Geological Survey, the Department of Geological Sciences at the University of Kentucky and other sites in the state as part of a continuing scientific exchange focusing on earthquake studies.
Chinese scientists from the Lanzhou Institute of Seismology made an initial visit in May, followed by a return visit in June and July by representatives of the KGS and the Department of Geological Sciences.
During their September visit, the Chinese researchers will give two lectures on earthquakes at UK focusing on hazard mapping. The Deputy Director of the Institute of Geophysics at China 's Earthquake Administration, Mengtan Gao will discuss “Seismic hazard zoning in China ,” and Deputy Director Furen Xie, of the Institute of Crustal Dynamics will speak on “ Tectonic Stress Field and Earthquakes in China ”
The group will also visit with staff of the Geological Survey and the Geological Sciences Department. In addition, they will travel to western Kentucky to visit the KGS office in Henderson , Kentucky 's Seismic and Strong Motion Network, and the New Madrid Seismic Zone, and Washington D.C. to visit several federal agencies.
The developing relationship between China and the University of Kentucky is expected to result in student exchanges between the two countries over the next few years and an earthquake workshop next summer, along with joint research projects on the origin and behavior of earthquakes.
KGS and Chinese seismic researchers work together to make a seismic reflection profile of an active Chinese fault during a visit the KGS researchers made this summer. They used a combination of equipment brought from UK and instruments operated by the Chinese hosts.
