Cores are cylindrical samples of rock drilled from below the surface of the earth and brought up for description and sampling. The diameter of cores ranges from 1 to 3.5 inches, depending on the drill bit used. Standard coal exploration cores are usually 2.5 to 3.5 inches in width. The length of core obtained depends on the type of information needed.
