Using KCRIS coal-thickness data, KGS estimated original coal resources for eastern and western Kentucky in the late 1970's and early 1980's. These data are published in reports by Smith and Brant.
More recent efforts associated with the U.S. Geological Survey's National Coal Assessment Program have been producing revised estimates for selected coal beds using both the KCRIS and coal borehole databases. The latter data have been published as part of the Coal Atlas series of KGS Map and Chart series publications.
The results have also been converted to a digital coal-resources database; contact Bethany Overfield at (859) 323-0514. The database contains information on thickness categories, reliability categories, coal beds, counties, and reserve districts.
