Why was the data set created?

General oil and gas well location data for use in petroleum exploration and development and other subsurface investigations

How was the data set created?

  1. From what previous works were the data drawn?

    (source 1 of 1)
    Type_of_Source_Media: chart
    Source_Scale_Denominator: Various

  2. How were the data generated, processed, and modified?

    (process 1 of 1)
    Metadata imported.

Data sources used in this process:

    • C:\DOCUME~1\bnuttall\LOCALS~1\Temp\xml1F.tmp

  3. What similar or related data should the user be aware of?

How reliable are the data; what problems remain in the data set?

  1. How well have the observations been checked?

  2. How accurate are the geographic locations?

Horizontal accuracy is a function of the quality of map data available at the Kentucky Geological Survey. Historic well location maps and literature that do not meet current standards are often used in conjunction with modern topographic maps to determine a location. Beginning with the adoption of KRS 353 in 1960, a well location plat prepared by a licensed land surveyor is required to be submitted with an application for a permit to drill a well. Most locations have not been field checked.

  3. How accurate are the heights or depths?

  4. Where are the gaps in the data? What is missing?

  5. How consistent are the relationships among the observations, including topology?

How can someone get a copy of the data set?

Are there legal restrictions on access or use of the data?

Access_Constraints: None.
Use_Constraints:
This database may not be distributed in whole or in part without acknowledgement of the Kentucky Geological Survey. All documentation, data files, and components of the shape file as listed in ogwells.html must be distributed together.

    Downloadable Data

  3. What legal disclaimers am I supposed to read?

Data in this file are presented as is with no warranty either expressed or implied as to the completeness or accuracy of any location or well status. Data on file at the Kentucky Geological Survey are submitted by well operators under requirements established by Kentucky Revised Statute 353. The producing or abandoned status of any well is dependent on the completion type reported by the operator on the well log and completion report, on the availability of a plugging affidavit, and on other information or maps on file in the Public Information Center of the Kentucky Geological Survey.

  4. How can I download or order the data?
