Significant coal resources remain in the Western Kentucky Coal Field.
Conventional mining and utilization of this resource continues to be hindered by high sulfur contents (ɯ %, CAAA90), as well as excessive depth of cover in many areas ( ft).
The Davis, Dekovan, Springfield, Herrin and Baker coal beds, where deeply buried, may represent attractive targets for CBM development. Cumulative coal thickness exceeds 25 ft in some areas. Organic-rich, black shale roof strata may also contribute to overall methane production.
Exploration strategy: target areas where the WKY 9 is ft; drilling to the level of the Davis coal (WKY #6) is recommended.
These beds may also be good targets for sequestration of CO2, and enhanced methane production.
