Seismic Hazard Maps and Time Histories for the Seismic Design of Highway Bridges in Kentucky

Kentucky is affected by earthquakes from several seismic zones in and around the state. The most important one is the New Madrid Seismic Zone, in which at least three great earthquakes, each estimated to have been greater than magnitude 7.5 on the Richter scale, occurred from December 1811 to February 1812. Though the state was sparsely settled at the time, these great earthquakes affected the whole Commonwealth of Kentucky. Estimates of ground motion that could occur in the next 500 years in Kentucky are significant, especially for western Kentucky. This project will develop seismic hazard maps and design parameters for highway bridges in Kentucky. The maps will be used to prevent damage to this vital part of Kentucky's transportation infrastructure.
