Regulatory

The oil and gas industry in Kentucky is regulated by the Kentucky Department of Mines and Minerals, Division of Oil and Gas. A permit is required to drill a well and a bond must be posted. See the requirements for drilling an oil or gas well in Kentucky. Contact Rick Bender, Director of the Division, at 859/246-2026 for further information.

Geologic Data Center

The Geologic Data Center at the Kentucky Geological Survey is the official repository for oil and gas drilling records. The Center is located in the Mining and Mineral Resources Building on the campus of the University of Kentucky. Records for an estimated 200,000 wells are on file in the library and include drillers' logs, location plats, geophysical logs, plugging affidavits, and others. The library is open to the public from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm weekdays. A copy service is available. Additionally, much of the information is available in electronic form. Contact Theola Evans, supervisor of the Geologic Data Center at 859/257-5500 for further information.
