Monroe County had an estimated population of 10,946 (4,580 households) in 1999; projected population is 9,675 (4,272 households) in 2020. Nearly all of Monroe County is served by public water systems. It is reported that those who are not served either do not want to be served or say it is too expensive to extend pipes to their homes. The Water Resource Development Commission has prepared a report on water-supply infrastructure in Monroe County. It is estimated that there are over 200,000 water wells in Kentucky.
The Kentucky Groundwater Data Repository, maintained by the Kentucky
Geological Survey, has information on over 50,000 of these wells. The
