Professor Freehling joined the University of Kentucky as an Otis A. Singletary Professor in the Humanities in 1994. The author of several award-winning books on the Coming of the Civil War, he is now at work on the second volume of his Road to Disunion, on a book aboutwhy the South lost the Civil War, and on a volume concerning the emergence of a distinctively American aesthetic. Professor Freehling won prizes for undergraduate teaching at the University of Michigan and the Johns Hopkins University. At Kentucky, he is most interested in spreading small group, interdisciplinary undergraduate teaching, especially as Co-director of the University's Program in American Culture and as Director of the Freshman Discovery Seminar Program.
