Bessie Guerrant is director of the Office of Research Assessment and co-director
of Experiences in Undergraduate Research and Kreative Activities (eUreKa!)
at the University of Kentucky. Serving the Executive Vice President for
Research, she manages several databases designed to track and monitor
the University of Kentucky Research Challenge Trust Funds. She also directs
the activities of the UK Undergraduate Research Program (serving first-and
second year students), the Bucks for Brains Summer Research Program (for
UK Undergraduates) and the Kentucky Young Researchers Program (serving
high school students).
Ms. Guerrant is a former Kentucky Distinguished Educator and was the director
of Equity for the Kentucky Partnership For Reform Initiatives in Science
and Mathematics (PRISM) Initiative from 1993 to 1997. Her background includes
extensive experience in education reform, particularly the Kentucky Education
Reform Act (KERA) of 1990, school improvement methods, and professional
development for educators. She has written several successful federal
education grants and directed the initiatives. Ms. Guerrant has also worked
at the national level as a member of the National Science Foundation/Statewide
Systemic Initiative Equity Forum Committee and the National Science Foundation/Statewide
Systemic Initiative Forum Planning Committee. She has also served as a
proposal reader for NASA. She currently serves on numerous boards and
committees, including the President’s Commission on Women at UK.
Ms. Guerrant earned both a BA and M. Ed. in Elementary and Early Childhood
Education from Smith College, Northampton, Massachusetts. She holds both
teaching and principalship certification and is currently completing her
doctoral degree in the area of Education Administration at the University
of Kentucky.
