Professor
Daniel B. Rowland, an alumnus of Yale and Oxford universities
and a University of Kentucky history professor since 1974, is the
director of the Gaines Center for the Humanities. Rowland is a past recipient
of the university's Chancellor's Award for Outstanding Teaching and an
expert
on Russian history. His activity in historic preservation in Lexington
has
included chairing the Blue Grass Trust for Historic Preservation committee
that encouraged UK to preserve the three Maxwell Street buildings that
now
house the Gaines Center. In addition to his efforts to preserve the Maxwell
Street buildings, Rowland's involvement in the Gaines Center prior to
being
named Director included interviewing candidates for the Gaines Fellowships,
serving on the center's advisory committee and encouraging his best history
students to apply for the program.
