Frank Ettensohn grew up in the Cincinnati, Ohio, area, and from a very early age, was collecting fossils and rocks and trying to tell people about them, which is what he still does as a university professor. Frank received his B.S. and M.S. in Geology from the University of Cincinnati and his Ph.D. in Geology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Frank has been teaching and researching in sedimentary geology and paleontology since arriving at the University of Kentucky in 1975; he was chair of the Geology Department for eight years and is currently director of the Honors Program at the University of Kentucky. He has taught in high school, the military, teacher development, and as a visiting professor in the former Soviet Union, China, Ecuador, and Nepal. He has won two Fulbright fellowships, two Levorsen Best Paper Awards (ES-Am. Assoc. Petrol. Geologists), and recently, Educator of the Year Award (ES-Am. Assoc. Petrol. Geologists). He has published more than 150 scientific papers and has advised 40 graduate students to degree completion.He especially enjoys working in the field with students, travelling with his family, hiking, camping, and his work in Scouting. |
