Bell county is located in the southeastern mountains of Kentucky and borders the states of Tennessee and Virginia. It was formed in 1867 and was originally known as Josh Bell county for Joshua Bell, Kentucky congressman. The county seat is Pineville.

Pine Mountain State Resort Park and Cumberland Gap National Historical Park are located in Bell county.
