Carlisle county was formed in 1886. It is located in the Jackson Purchase region of the state. The elevation in the county ranges from 283 to 550 feet above sea level. In 2010 the county population was 5,104 in a land area of 189.43 square miles, an average of 26.9 people per square mile.

The county seat is Bardwell.
