Garrard county was formed in 1797. It is located in the Bluegrass region of the state. The elevation in the county ranges from 514 to 1400 feet above sea level. In 2010 the county population was 16,912 in a land area of 230.08 square miles, an average of 73.5 people per square mile.

The county seat is Lancaster.
