Meade county is located in the Pennyrile region on the Ohio River. It was formed in 1823 and named for Captain James Meade, a Kentuckian killed in the War of 1812. The county seat is Brandenburg. The original county seat, from 1823 until 1825, was Claysville, which no longer exists. The population in 1990 was 24,170.
