Rockcastle county was formed in 1810. It is located in the Pennyrile and Eastern Coal Field regions of the state. The elevation in the county ranges from 810 to 1638 feet above sea level. In 2000 the county population was 16,582 in a land area of 317.53 square miles, an average of 52.2 people per square mile. The county seat is Mount Vernon.
