Wayne county was formed in 1800. It is located in the Pennyrile and Eastern Coal Field regions of the state. The elevation in the county ranges from 723 to 1788 feet above sea level. In 2000 the county population was 19,923 in a land area of 459.40 square miles, an average of 43.4 people per square mile. The county seat is Monticello.
