Horse Cave, Kentucky

Horse Cave is a Hart county town about five miles south of Munfordville. It was established in the 1840s and named for the large cave in the middle of town (which is also known as Hidden River Cave). The name Horse Cave is associated with numerous folk tales involving Indians, horse thieves, or horses falling in sink holes, but it may just refer to the size of the cave opening. The town was also called Caverna from 1869 until 1879. The Horse Cave post office opened in 1860.
