Middletown is an eastern Jefferson county town and suburb of Louisville. It was established around 1784 and the post office, since closed, opened in 1806. It was probably named for its location between Louisville and Shelbyville. It was an incorporated city from 1797 until 1962. The population in 1990 was 5,016.
