Shively, Kentucky

Shively, a western Jefferson county town and suburb of Louisville was settled about 1780. Among the early settlers was Christian Shively who operated a mill and tavern. The town became identified with St. Helen Catholic Church, established in 1897, but the name Shively was adopted for the post office, which opened in 1920 and has since closed, because the name St. Helen was already in use. Shively was incorporated in 1938. The population in 1990 was 15,535.
