Sonora is a southeastern Hardin county community on I-65, US 31W, and KY 84. It was established in the middle of the nineteenth century during construction of the Louisville and Nashville Railroad. The name may come from the Mexican home of a railroad worker. The Sonora post office opened in 1859. The population in 1990 was 295.
A Buck Snort or Bucksnort post office operated in the same area in 1858 and 1859.
