Sturgis is a southern Union county town on the Tradewater River and US 60. It was established in 1886 by the Cumberland Iron and Land Company. The source of the name is not clear, but could have been a local resident. The city limits now also encompass the communities of Commercial Point and Buffalo City. The Sturgis post office opened in 1888 and the town was incorporated in 1890. The population in 1990 was 2,184.
