Law Library Services

Welcome to the Alvin E. Evans Law Library, part of the University of Kentucky libraries network. The Law Library contains over 460,000 volumes and volume equivalents and 3,795 serial subscriptions. The Law Library is located in the College of Law building, and entrance and exit is through the door located on the side of the building facing S. Limestone Street. All other doors are fire and emergency exits.

The Law Library is open to all faculty, staff and students of the University of Kentucky and to the public seeking to use our legal research collections.

Ours is primarily a research collection, and very few materials circulate outside the Library.

The Law Library's primary mission is to support the College of Law's academic programs as well as to provide the highest quality service, in a hospitable environment, to faculty, students, and alumni. As the Law Library's most valuable resource, the library team strives to exceed the expectations of its clients by providing creative and flexible solutions to their diverse and evolving information needs.

LIBRARY CIRCULATION POLICIES

Any citizen of Kentucky can obtain a library card to borrow materials from the Law Library. Not all Law Library materials circulate outside the Library. Multi-volume sets, loose-leaf sets, reporter volumes, statutes, journals and government documents are available for in-Library use only. Circulation periods will vary, but most books may be checked out for 28 days.

LIBRARY RESERVE MATERIALS

Permanent reserve materials and course reserve materials are shelved behind the Circulation Desk. Permanent reserves include unbound journals (most current issues), University of Kentucky Continuing Legal Education materials, hornbooks, nutshells and selected Kentucky materials. Course reserves include any materials placed on reserve by professors for courses currently being taught. Generally reserve materials may be checked out for up to two hours. Videotapes are also kept on reserve and may circulate for three days.

GOVERNMENT DOCUMENTS

The Law Library is a selective government documents depository, collecting approximately 15% of materials provided through this program. Young Library is the regional depository library for Kentucky, receiving all depository publications. Paper copies of Law Library government documents are housed primarily on the lower level of the Law Library in compact shelving. Government documents are also received in microfiche format and are available on the lower level of the law library. Please contact a reference librarian for additional information or assistance in using these materials.
