Trial Advocacy Team Sweeps Regional Tournament

LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 3, 2008) – Both teams from the UK College of Law National Trial Team defeated competition from 26 teams to sweep the Seventh Region Trial Advocacy Tournament held Feb. 15 – 17 at University of Dayton School of Law. Team members Charnel Burton, Justin Peterson, Katherine Paisley and Adam Spicer will now travel to Austin, Texas, for the National Trial Competition that takes place March 26 – 29.

Their faculty adviser, Allison Connelly, is proud of the team's accomplishment.

"I am bursting with pride in winning our region. The UK College of Law now has two of the top 28 teams in the nation," Connelly said.

The National Trial Competition is sponsored by the Texas Young Lawyers Association and the American College of Trial Lawyers. Teams from around the country compete in one of 14 regional competitions in February. Each school may send up to two teams, with the top two teams from each region advancing to the national competition in March. UK competes with law schools from Michigan and Ohio in the seventh region.

Burton, of Beattyville, Ky., Peterson, of Lexington, Paisley, of Lexington, and Spicer, of Flora, Miss., now have a little over a month to prepare for the national competition.

"The best thing about this competition is that we all get to advance together. After all the hard work we've put in over the last several weeks, it is great to know that it paid off for all of us," Burton said.

Each participant is a member of the Trial Advocacy Board (TAB), a highly selective, student-led organization dedicated to developing effective, practical trial advocacy skills. TAB teams consistently place among the best in the nation in the National Trial Competition.
