Who are we?
Central Kentucky Radio Eye, Inc. is a 24 hour Radio Reading Service - broadcasting seven days a week, every day of the year. It is managed and operated by a small staff of three and the Treasurer. Radio Eye is a member of the International Audio Association of Information Services (IAAIS). Our mission is to read newspapers, magazines and other everyday literature, including health periodicals, to those eligible people who are unable to read or access the printed word.
Who is eligible to receive our service?
(1) Any person who cannot see to read due to blindness or visual impairment.
(2) Any person who cannot hold or turn a page due to a physical disability such as stroke, multiple sclerosis (MS), Parkinson's disease, cerebral palsy, arthritis, aging, etc.
(3) Any person with a temporary visual or physical disability (caused by illness, injury or surgery) which prohibits them from reading the printed word.
What can you hear on Radio Eye?
Every morning Radio Eye airs a locally produced broadcast in which volunteers read state, regional and local newspapers, including the Lexington Herald Leader and the Louisville Courier Journal. Lexington and Kentucky Obituaries are read each day at 9am (10am Sundays.) We also provide a half hour program of Lexington Herald Leader Sports each day, complete with the "On Air" game schedule.
Every weekday morning you can hear the Health Corner, in which Radio Eye volunteers read health newsletters and health periodicals from such reliable sources as Mayo Clinic, Johns Hopkins, Harvard Health, etc. Weekday mornings we also broadcast our Kentucky Series, providing readings from local magazines such as The Kentucky Explorer and The Lane Report, and other Kentucky literature of interest to our listeners.
Every afternoon and throughout the night Radio Eye provides national newspapers and national programming through our affiliation with The "InTouch" Network in New York. Listeners can hear readings from such publications as New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Newsweek On Air, Readers Digest, Prime Time Radio, Christian Science Monitor, People's Pharmacy, etc., which Radio Eye accesses through a satellite feed.
Full Details of our 24 hour broadcasting schedule can be found in the Radio Eye Program Guide.
How can you hear us?
Radio Eye broadcasts on a closed-circuit frequency. The only way you can hear our 24 hour radio broadcast is on a special pre-tuned radio, which we loan to eligible listeners for as long as they need or want our service. Our service and the radio is free of charge. (Radio Eye requests a one time $25 user fee to help offset operation costs. Radio Eye may waive the fee in cases of hardship, and anyone unable to pay the fee is still eligible to apply for a Radio Eye radio.) The broadcast can be heard in Central Kentucky (in an approximate 80 mile radius) from Owenton in the north to Berea in the south, and from Bardstown in the west to Beattyville in the east.
On March 11, 2002, Radio Eye expanded its service to include an audio broadcast on Library Channel 20 on Lexington Insight Cable TV. The broadcast consists of a live reading of the Lexington Herald-Leader, from 8am to 10am, Monday through Saturday, by Radio Eye volunteers. Listeners in Lexington, Fayette County and parts of Jessamine County may hear this two hour broadcast on the television by tuning into Library Channel 20 on Lexington Insight Cable TV.
