"A LITTLE CHANGE CAN DO YOU GOOD"

There's a lot going on this summer at CKRE. We have new volunteers, staff and expanded program content that we hope will make our service even more valuable and enjoyable for our listeners.

First up is the departure of our Studio Manager, Vanessa Oliver. Vanessa is returning to her restaurant roots and will be General Manager at Alfalfa when it opens in its new downtown location. She will also continue to work at the Farmers' Market.

Vanessa joined CKRE in early 2002 as a volunteer. A year later, she was hired as CKRE's Studio Supervisor to manage the office, coordinate volunteer schedules and make sure CKRE operated smoothly every day. Vanessa says that she has enjoyed interacting with the volunteers and "hearing my golden voice out on the air." She's also stayed cool under pressure, especially "when everything stops working at once." This usually happens on a Monday," she said.

Executive Director Margaret Chase says that Vanessa's "enthusiasm and dedication (not to mention her great shoes and colorful purses) made Vanessa a pleasure to work with." We wish Vanessa the best of luck in her new endeavors.

Of course the show will go on at CKRE: new Studio Manager Anna McGlone began in June (after returning from her honeymoon).

We trust that the new faces and content will help CKRE to give its listeners even more of what they have come to expect. Content that prompted the wife of listener Carl Dicken to call and tell us that whenever somebody asks her, "Did you read in the paper today that...," she is able to respond "Oh, I already heard all about that this morning" on CKRE.

FROM THE CHAIR

Earlier this year, the House and Senate approved House Bill 262, regarding funding for audio information services such as CKRE. Unfortunately, on April 9th Governor Fletcher vetoed parts of HB 262 -- in essence removing support for CKRE from the bill. Although this was disappointing for CKRE, we want to say thank you to the army of friends and advocates who came together in support of CKRE.

In early June we said thank you and goodbye to our Studio Manager, Vanessa Oliver, who was greatly appreciated by all of us at CKRE. In her place, we welcome Anna McGlone and are glad to have her on our team.

In other news we welcome Tom Godell as General Manager of WUKY radio. Tom's previous experience with an Illinois radio reading service will be a great help to CKRE.

And lastly, we are appealing to listeners, volunteers, and all our friends to support CKRE's latest fundraising efforts. CKRE has teamed up with Barnes & Noble for a Bookfair Event in July, and you can read all about it on page three of this newsletter.
Margaret Chase, Executive Director

BUY A BOOK AND HELP CKRE

Shop at Barnes & Noble in Hamburg Pavilion on July 16, 17 and 18 and have a part of your purchase donated to CKRE.

This is a great way to help CKRE. Best of all it doesn't cost you a penny! The way it works is you buy a book, fill out a voucher in support of CKRE, and present the voucher to the cashier at the time of your purchase. It's that simple!

If you have a birthday or any other gift-giving occasion coming up -- this would be a great time to buy a book. Better yet, make it two books! Purchases can also include audio books, CDs, etc.

You could also help support CKRE and print-impaired Central Kentuckians by asking family and friends to shop Barnes & Noble during the bookfair event.

Just download and print this voucher (it's a Word document) on this page and take it with you to the store. Extra copies will be at the store. For more information, call CKRE at 859-257-2702.

So please help CKRE. Mark your calendar July 16, 17 and 18, and shop at Barnes & Noble at Hamburg Pavilion. Many thanks.

READER PROFILES

We would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to some of the volunteer readers at CKRE.

Joey Northcutt, who grew up in Florence, is entering his fifth and final year of studies as an Architecture Major at the University of Kentucky.

He has been volunteering at CKRE since February and says he found CKRE at a web site that matches people who want to volunteer with places that need help.

Joey enjoys reading, soccer, movies, art and training for sprint triathlons. In past summers, he has worked as a program director for the YMCA's Camp Ernst in Burlington, Kentucky.

Joey's claim to fame is that he was recently struck in the foot by lightening. However, we are glad to say that Joey is OK, and you can hear him on CKRE each Friday, when he reads the Lexington Herald-Leader Sports section.

Kate Lillich, who recently retired from teaching French at Lexington Catholic High School, was spurred in March to volunteer at CKRE by two friends who have volunteered for us, Pat Esrael and Terry Green. She does live readings of the Herald-Leader and Courier Journal on a fill-in basis. Kate also sings with the Lexington Singers, likes to walk with her Westie terrier and enjoys visiting her grandchildren in England. Her husband, Tom Lillich, also retired this year from his position as a professor at the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry.

TOM GODELL

There's a new face overseeing operations at WUKY 91.3 FM.

Tom Godell has been named General Manager of the University of Kentucky's public radio station, which broadcasts CKRE on an auxiliary frequency. Godell's official first day was April 19, but he made his presence known before then by appearing at various public functions in his new capacity.

Godell takes over for Roger Chesser, who has been with WUKY for 21 years - 15 of them as General Manager. Under Chesser, the station's reputation and operating budget grew exponentially.

Godell comes highly qualified to continue that success: he was formerly the associate director of Southern Illinois University at Carbondale's Broadcast Service and general manager of WSIU Radio since 1995, where he oversaw all aspects of the three WSIU radio stations. He was also vice president of the Illinois Public Broadcasting Council and has a bachelor's degree in philosophy from the University of Michigan.

Listeners may already have heard him reading on CKRE. He recently stepped into the breach when we were missing one of our regular readers.

Welcome, Tom, to the WUKY family.

KENTUCKY TALKING BOOKS

People with a visual disability or a physical disability that prevents then from holding a book and turning the pages can borrow Braille books and books on tape from the Kentucky Talking Book Library.

The library, which serves the entire state, is located at the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives in Frankfort. It has more than 50,000 titles, more than 70 magazines and about 300 descriptive videos, which are VHS movies that have narration for those unable to see the action.

Patrons who wish to listen to books on tape are provided with a specially-designed cassette player. Materials are mailed in containers that make returning them simple.

The loan period is 30 days; return postage is free. Once a patron's application for the service is approved, a librarian will work with them to find out what kind of books the person likes and how often to send them.

For more information or an application for service, please call 1-800-372-2968.

LISTENER COMMENTS

FROM MT. STERLING: Several weeks ago, we received a great message from one of our favorite (long time) listeners in Mount Sterling, letting us know that it was volunteer Karri Sandino's first anniversary at CKRE. Thank you, Mike, for calling us. You made our day. And we also heard that Mike apparently does very accurate impressions of some of our volunteers!

And thank you, Karri. She reads the Herald-Leader on Saturdays from 8am-10am.

AND FROM WINCHESTER,: We thank the listener who took the time to let us know that (in listening to CKRE) she has "never enjoyed anything so much."

LISTENER QUESTION

Q: "What is the InTouch Network? I hear it mentioned when I am listeneing to CKRE."

CKRE PROGRAM NOTES

LIGHTER SIDE OF CKRE: CKRE has recently added a new segment to our morning broadcast of the Lexington Herald-Leader.

The Lighter Side of CKRE is broadcast Monday through Friday at approximately 9:40 a.m., and contains readings of the Dear Abby column and the local primetime TV listings for that evening.

If you have any questions or comments, please call us at 257-2702. We welcome and appreciate all feedback from our listeners!

TELEVISION BROADCAST: Here's a reminder that our two-hour reading of the Lexington Herald-Leader can be heard on Library Channel 20 in Lexington and Fayette County.

If you are away from home and cannot tune into your CKRE radio, you can still hear the Herald-Leader on Library Channel 20 (on Insight Cable TV) Monday through Saturday from 8am to 10am.

BOOK SERIES: We would like to tell you about an upcoming book in our "Book Series" to be broadcast on CKRE weekdays from 1pmto 2pm. Ten Things I Learned From Bill Porter by Shelly Brady is a great book about a door-to-door salesman living with cerebral palsy, and his will and determination to overcome great obstacles and to succeed. The book will be read by CKRE volunteer Lisa Murphy in four episodes. It will be broadcast two weeks after this newsletter arrives in your mailboxes, and we will announce the exact date on CKRE.

OUR WORLD: If you have not tuned into CKRE on Wednesdays at 7 pm, we suggest you do. "Our World," produced by the InTouch Network, and brought to you by CKRE, is a great program on various topics of interest to our listeners.

AARP PUBLICATIONS: We regularly broadcast readings from the AARP Magazine and the AARP Bulletin on Wednesdays at 10am in the Health Corner.

THE OBITUARIES: Each weekday at 9am we broadcast Lexington and Kentucky obituaries. We read only the name and age, but as a service to our CKRE listeners, you may call us at 257-2702 and we will read you the entire obituary over the telephone.

HEAR THE NEWSLETTER: Here's a reminder that we always read our newsletter on the air. Be sure to tune into CKRE for the reading of this Summer Edition of Radio Eye at 10 am on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday one week after it arrives in your mailbox.

ANOTHER REMINDER! Listeners are reminded that Monday through Friday just after the obituaries at 9am, CKRE airs its Program Guide for that day, together with any special CKRE Announcements.
