"WELCOME TO A NEW YEAR"

Welcome to a new year and a new edition of Radio Eye.

The past year was a very successful one for CKRE.

Most recently, CKRE was approved for several major grants. These grants - from the Fifth Third Bank Foundation, The Lexington Lions Club and the Atlanta-based Frances Hollis Brain Foundation - will go a long way towards continuing the expansion of our broadcast capabilities.

In July, we partnered with Barnes & Noble Booksellers for a book sale that not only helped us to raise funds but also helped to raise the public's awareness of our local radio reading service.

Our Annual Appeal was also very successful. Inside, you'll find that the list of donors covers two pages.

You'll also find a message from Executive Director Margaret Chase, a few announcements, some program notes, as well as a piece on the Lions Club. The work of the International Association of Lions Clubs illustrates the impact that a civic organization with a history of global giving can have on small, non-profit organizations such as CKRE in communities around the globe.

And, of course, there's the continued support of our volunteers and listeners, who are truly the heart and soul of CKRE. As you can see, a lot of people working a little can make a huge difference.

FROM THE CHAIR

Someone said it takes a village. And at CKRE it certainly does take a lot of people - whether through financial contributions, in-kind gifts and services, or volunteering their time at the studio - to make things work. Everyone plays an important part, and together they helped make 2004 another successful year for CKRE.

Our 4th Annual Appeal met with a great response, for which we thank everyone. This is our most important fundraiser each year, and your financial support enables CKRE to continue to provide its listeners with a "window" into the printed world.

In July, our book fair was another success. Our appreciation goes to all those who participated, to our media friends who helped us spread the word and especially to Barnes & Noble, who gave us the fundraising opportunity. We plan to repeat the book fair in the spring.

We would also like to welcome Tom Godell to our board of directors. Tom not only represents WUKY, the station that carries our radio signal, but his previous association with and Illinois radio reading service will be a great asset to CKRE.

Margaret Chase, Executive Director

LEXMARK INTERNATIONAL, INC.

Thank you Lexmark International, Inc. CKRE appreciates your help in making possible this Winter Edition of Radio Eye for the benefit of our listeners, friends and the health-care and vision community. Thanks also to "Joni and Friends" for giving their time to fold the pages.

NOTEWORTHY
CKRE IN THE NEWS

Central Kentucky Radio Eye was well represented in the media during the final months of 2004.

Chris Shafer was published in the Nov. 11 edition of the Lexington Herald- Leader and helped spread the word about CKRE's services and its need for public support.

An Associated Press article published in late November focused on a Pittsburgh radio reading service that almost closed due to inadequate funding. The piece included quotations from CKRE's own Margaret Chase on the importance of local radio reading services.

UPDATE ON JOYCE

As some of you may have heard, CKRE office manager and long-time volunteer Joyce McGuire recently fell and fractured her right hip. Joyce was admitted to Saint Joseph's Hospital, where she underwent surgery to have a pin inserted. She is currently recovering at home. If you would like to send Joyce a message of support, please contact the CKRE office and we will be happy to pass those along.

THE LIONS AND CKRE: A SHARED VISION

Most people know of the Lions Club through its work for eyesight conservation; healthy vision has been the cornerstone of the Lions' mission since 1925, when Helen Keller charged the club to be "knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness."

But did you know that The International Association of Lions Clubs has grown to become the largets volunteer service organization in the world?

Founded in 1917 by Chicago businessman Melvin Jones, the Lions Club now includes 1.4 million members in 46,000 regional clubs in 193 countries and geographic areas.

What began as one man's vision to unite and organize local civic organizations across America is now an international operation with a wide range of programs; all of which underscore the Lions Club motto: "We Serve."

There are currently five chapters in Lexington, all of which work together to put on the annual Lions Club Bluegrass Fair at Masterson Station Park. This popular event is not only a thrill for area residents, it's also a major fundraiser that allows the Lexington Lions Club to donate more than $150,000 annually to local non-profit organizations, as well as to support Lions Club programs such as Camp Crescendo, a camp located near Louisville for vision and/or hearing-impaired children.

Central Kentucky Radio Eye also benefits from the Lions generosity.

Jim Kemp, a retired University of Kentucky animal science professor, is a member of the CKRE Board of Directors. Jim has also been a member of the Lexington Lions Club since 1963 and is in the Lions Club Hall of Fame.

The fact that the Lions Club has had a representative on the CKRE board for at least the past decade underscores the natural affinity between the Lions' dedication to eyesight conservation and CKRE's mission to make local print materials available to people with vision impairments.

Said Jim: "We fit together nicely."
