The art of illustrating texts in type from art on wood began early in the history of printing. In the incunabula period it reached its zenith with the richly adorned Nuremberg Chronicle of 1493. Early illustrators worked "on the plank," or the side grain, of a piece of wood. In the nineteenth century the technique of wood engraving, or cutting on the end grain of the wood, attained an extraordinary level of achievement in the hands of Thomas Bewick. Bewick has many followers, including Eric Gill, Joan Hassall, John Buckland Wright, Richard Shirley Smith, and, in present days, WESLEY W. BATES.

WESLEY BATES last year published Wendell Berry's Roots to the Earth, illustrated with his own wood engravings. Born in the Yukon, educated in Canada as a painter and printmaker, Mr. Bates presently works as a freelance artist in Ontario. His clients include the University of Toronto Press, Harcourt Brace, Penguin-Viking, The Wall Street Journal, HarperCollins, Imperial Oil, Nabisco, and IGA Foods Canada.

Join WESLEY BATES as he discusses the methods of cutting illustrations on wood, work with him in making original prints at the press, then mount them in a text set from movable type.
