Pen to Paper:
In the Spirit of Koch and Hammer

A Calligraphy Workshop with Janet Lorence
Participants will view early manuscripts from the Rare Book Collection, work
with forming letters in the styles of Rudolf Koch and Victor Hammer, and also
experiment with calligraphic monograms such as those appearing in Koch's
Book of Signs. See demonstrations and work with calligraphy exercises; discuss
pens, papers, techniques, and resources. Bamboo and popsicle pens will be
provided, and participants will receive a list of recommended supplies.
Continental breakfast will be provided with registration, beginning at 8:30 a.m.
The workshop begins at 9:00 and continues through mid-afternoon.
The workshop is limited to twelve persons, who must register in advance. The
workshop fee is $30, checks payable to The King Library Press and mail to King

JANET LORENCE is a calligrapher and papermaker working in New Harmony,
Indiana. She studied calligraphy with Lloyd Reynolds and papermaking
with Kathryn and Howard Clark.
A special interest of Ms. Lorence has been the pen work of Rudolf Koch,
whose studio was in Offenbach, Germany, and also the uncial letterforms
which Koch's friend, the Viennese artist Victor Hammer, transformed from
manuscript into type.
Ms. Lorence has worked both as an educator and as an arts professional,
carrying out specialized design projects for a variety of clients. Her
work has appeared on educational television, on brochures, invitations,
newsletters, maps, posters, awards, certificates, and even T-shirts.
She has taught many workshops and classes in calligraphy within Indiana
at such sites as Indiana University; Indiana State University; the
Evansville, Indiana Art Museum; the Indianapolis Art League; Lafayette,
Indiana Art Museum; and numerous other sites. She is a member of the New
Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art, the Arts Council of Southwestern
Indiana, and the New Harmony Artist's Guild.
