In June 2012, Keith Jackson became the first African American to be named Chief of the Lexington Division of Fire and Emergency Services. The appointment was made by Mayor Jim Gray. Jackson is a 21 year veteran and served for more than a year as the interim chief. He is a graduate of the University of Kentucky and author of the unpublished manuscript History of Black Firefighters.
