Binding and Shelf Prep Unit

The Binding Unit in Young Library prepares books, journals, and dissertations for library binding. Journals are organized into logical units and bound periodically. Damaged books are rebound to extend their useful life. Some new paperbacks are bound to prevent damage from frequent use. Dissertations and theses are bound after the students complete their degrees.

The Young Library Binding Unit serves the collections housed in Young Library and assists with the training and advising of binding personnel located in other UK Libraries.

Kathy Franklin supervises the Young Binding Unit with the assistance of the Preservation Librarian, Becky Ryder. Questions or concerns should be directed to Kathy via email at kmfran1@email.uky.edu or by phone at 257-0500, ext. 2030.

Please contact Kathy Franklin (email: kmfran1@uky.edu or phone 257-0500, ext. 2030) in Young Library Binding for further assistance.

What are the guidelines for binding dissertations and theses for the library?

The guidelines for binding dissertations and theses can be found on the Graduate School website. The Preservation Department collaborated with the Graduate School to update the guidelines during summer of 2000. The guidelines will be reviewed periodically to reflect development in new media and preservation technologies.

InfoKat says that the book I'm looking for is "At Bindery." What does this mean?

In Young Library, Preservation staff add the "at bindery" note to InfoKat when volumes are prepared for library binding. Most books are at the library bindery in Cleveland, Ohio for two weeks. During this time they are not available for use. However, if the book or journal has not yet left the building for shipment to the library binder, it may be used by patrons. Contact a librarian at a public service desk for assistance.

If you would like to see the book or journal when it returns from the library binder, please contact the Circulation Staff. They will ask the Binding Staff to retrieve the volume as soon as possible, and they will place the volume on hold for you at the Young Circulation Desk.
