The Problem
The nature of scholarly communication has changed drastically over the past decade, creating challenges and opportunities that require attention by faculty, administrators and librarians at academic institutions. With advances in technology resulting in changes in speed of communication, media format, user behavior and expectation, the current model of scholarly publishing is no longer sufficient to meet the needs of scholars producing and consuming information today.

What is happening?
- Prices of scholarly publications are skyrocketing
- Information created by our faculty is given to commercial publishers who then sell it back to the institution at high costs
Differing motives
- Scholars want to share work broadly
- Commercial publishers focus on opportunity to make large profits
Unfortunate Consequences
- Reduced access to scholarly material due to library cancellations (impacts journals and books!)
- Scholars give up copyrights to publishers leading to copyright restrictions on their own publications even in their own classrooms.
What can faculty do?
- Become familiar with the issues and share the information with colleagues.
- Support efforts to regain control of scholarly communication.
- Use direct influence in scholarly societies and on editorial boards.
- Become familiar with your intellectual property rights.
