Although LC supports the future implementation of a two-tiered hierarchical model, which consists of using the bib record for the print original as the main statement of the bibliographic indication of each edition, current LC practice requires creating a separate bib record for each version until implementation of the USMARC format for holdings.
Problems occur in large local online catalogs when a library holds several versions of the same bibliographic entity. Patrons must view and distinguish between numerous catalog entries to determine the desired format and its availability.
In anticipation of a national multiple versions policy, while mindful of present cataloging requirements outlined in AACR2 and LCRIs, we propose the following local policy for treatment of bibliographic records for NONSERIAL material when we hold both the original version and a microform reproduction:
SCOPE:
This policy applies only to MONOGRAPHS and NONSERIALS (there is already a policy for serials) and only to situations where the original is part of a processing unit's collection. When the original and more than one version are owned, apply this policy. If there is a question as to which version is the original, do not apply this policy.
FUTURE IMPLICATIONS:
When we receive a print copy of a title after we have received and cataloged a microform version, we will need to suppress the bib record for the microform and add a copy statement for the microform to the record for the original print version.
