LANGUAGE USED IN THE ENUMERATION OF MULTI-VOLUME WORKS

ENUMERATION POLICY

History: Over time, the libraries have sometimes used the language of the piece for enumeration and sometimes translated foreign language terms into English.

Rationale: The national standards developing in the area of holdings favors the language of the piece; Library of Congress favors language of the piece in call number assignment; most citation sources used by our patrons use the language of the piece when citing a particular volume, etc. Consistency in use of captions is beneficial to library staff and library patrons.

POLICY:

The language of the piece is the preferred form of enumeration for all areas where it might appear in the copy holdings record, item record and MARC holdings record.

If the multi-volume item is multilingual, the predominate language or the English enumeration will be preferred.

For multi-volume items which have no caption, just a numbering pattern; using no. in the call number, copy holdings, MHLD is appropriate, but not required.

For multi-volume items where the publisher changes the language of the enumeration pattern, the preference is to continue the established pattern.

The source for abbreviations will be the Caption Dictionary established by BPPAG for MARC holdings enumeration. This caption dictionary can be added to as needed by bringing the new abbreviations to BPPAG for consideration.

IMPLEMENTATION:

All multi-volume titles which are new to the libraries will be established using the language of the pieces.

Titles already received by the libraries will be changed when time and staffing permits. For example, during check in of new pieces, reclassification projects, or other maintenance work where staff is already handling the pieces.
