POLICY NO. 2
SERIALS IN MULTIPLE FORMAT
(NO LONGER USED)

The library system maintains serial titles in multiple physical forms (hard copy and microform). OCLC requires the use of separate bibliographic records for each physical form in which a serial is held. However, there is a move in the direction of the "master bibliographic record convention" -- one bibliographic record representing all physical forms of a serial title. Examples are the U. S. Newspaper Project and GPO cataloging practices.

Policy:

Only one bibliographic record will be used for serials having multiple physical forms. The bibliographic record of choice will be the record describing the original physical form of publication.

Form information will be given in holdings/location records.

This practice:
1. provides easier access to the user for comprehensive serials holdings.
2. is compatible with emerging national standards.
3. was adopted by the Planning Committee in 1986.
4. is currently applied in most processing centers at UK.
