The printing date has been found useful in multiple copy situations where, other than the barcode, only the printing date distinguishes the various copies. Furthermore, it helps sort out call number problems, identify items that were reclassified but not re-labelled, etc.
Use of printing date: For example, if Online Cataloging has 2 copies of an item and 1 copy has a printing date not appearing on the bibliographic record or other copy, then they place the printing date in subfield "x" (Non-public note) of the note field in the holdings record (MFHD). For single volumes the note will be in the 852 field; for multi-volumes it will be in the 866-868 field.
| Example: | Copy 1 has c1966, 1967 |
| Copy 2 has c1966, 1967 (1968 printing) |
The bibliographic record matches copy 1, so copy 2 will have 1968 printing placed in the note field of the holdings record for copy 2.
Policy:
When a copy is added that is new to the system, and the printing date does not appear on the bibliographic record, the printing date in the form -- <date> printing -- (e.g., 1970 printing) will be placed in subfield "x" of the note field in the holdings record. For single volumes the note will be in the 852 field; for multi-volumes it will be in the 866-868 field.
