Bibliographic Policies & Procedures Advisory Group

HISTORY

The Bibliographic policies and procedures for the University of Kentucky Libraries started in 1985 with the first on-line catalog, LS2000. These policies and procedures are drafted by the Bibliographic Policies and Procedures Advisory Group (BPPAG), which is made up of participants from all cataloging centers on campus.

The BPPAG rewrote the policies develop for LS2000 starting in 1990 when the libraries migrated to NOTIS. New policies were also developed for working with new online catalog.

In 2000, the University of Kentucky Libraries migrated to Voyager and the policies have been updated to reflect changes from this migration.

In 2003 with the definitive version of the policies existing on the libraries web page, BBPAG decided to create a history to track changes made to the policies as more updates were made.

CHANGES TO POLICIES:

The policy Computer Programs, Languages and Operating Systems (Policy 16) was removed from the list of active policies when the UK Computer Labs ceased to use the library catalog for their materials. This policy was a specific exception for them to track manuals for specific operating systems.

In February 2002, the Serials Titles in Multiple Physical Form (Policy 2) and Handling Non-serials Multiple Versions (different physical formats of the same edition) (Policy 10) were updated and combined to form the current policy - Multiple Versions - Same Title in Different Formats (Policy 22).

In April 2003, the Provisional Records (Policy 8) was removed from the active policy list. This policy outlined the use of a provisional record which existed in NOTIS but does not exist in the Voyager system. All provisional records were migrated from NOTIS to minimal level MARC records in Voyager.

In April 2004, the former policy 6 on Records for Serial Materials and policy 17 for MFHD Policy for Non-serial materials were combined to form the new Policy 6 MFHD Records Policy.
