In case you have not already heard, we have three new locally produced programs on CKRE. We have the weekly
Grocery Show, the weekly CKRE Community Update, and also a monthly program called "And Also...." These are in
response to listeners' requests and from ideas obtained from other sources. Either way, they represent CKRE's
desire to provide the very best service we can - and there are more details about these programs on page 6
of this newsletter. On a related subject, CKRE has begun extending its local hours on CKRE radio. On Monday through Friday,
from 1 pm to 2 pm (instead of the "InTouch" service), we have aired several serialized bool readings. After we broadcasted
Am I Old Yet by Leah Komaiko, a number of listeners were inspired to call and tell us how much they enjoyed it. With
the start of Keeneland, CKRE broadcasted the book Woman in Racing, in which several of our lady volunteers each
read chapters - including Mary Jean Wall, the volunteer reader who read the chapter on... Mary Jean Wall the sports writer!
We have some more books planned for the 1 pm to 2 pm "Book Series" slot and hope you will join us for that regularly. In more
good news, we want to acknowledge a generous donation from the John S. and James L. Knight Advised Fund through Tim
Kelly and the Bluegrass Community Foundation. Their help is very much appreciated by CKRE. We are also happy to say that
Wal-Mart has funded our 2003 Volunteer Appreciation Dinner. CKRE thanks Wal-Mart for their continued support, and we will
have more about this annual event in our next newsletter. CKRE has also been in the news: Jack Pattie on WVLK 590 gave
us an opportunity to tell his listeners about CKRE; Robynn Pease included us in her Gov't TV3 show Off Our Rockers;
and an article on CKRE, written by Robin Roenker, has appeared in the November issue of Kentucky Monthly magazine.
And finally, it's time our Third Annual Appeal. We are out of radios (again), a major piece of broadcast equipment is
"on the blink" - and we need your support to help us operate this coming year! CKRE will shortly be sending out Letters of
Appeal to our many old and (hopefully) new "Friends," as well as making some On-Air Appeals. CKRE helps those citizens who can
no longer read because of vision loss, physical disability, illness or injury. We also help younger people who want a service
that helps their aging or disabled parents live independently. And just as our listeners depend on CKRE as an important part
of their daily lives, so CKRE in turn depends on private donations and a caring community to ensure our voices are on the air.
We hope you can help us, and our many thanks go to all our past supporters.

CKRE NEEDS YOUR HELP
Central Kentucky Radio Eye depends entirely on private donations to keep our organization operating. Gifts and contributions to CKRE are tax deductible - and we are currently in need of the following supplies. If you want more information, or can help with the following Wish List items, please call us at 257-2702.
Many thanks.
It has become a regular feature of "Radio Eye" to introduce some of the volunteers who help keep our broadcast on the air. Please join us now to meet two of our readers, Jewel Vanderhoef and Karri Sandino.
Karri Sandino followed a friend to the Bluegrass from Wisconsin about seven years ago. The learning curve related to UK sports has been a bit of a challenge, but she is fond of Kentucky. Every day, on her way to work as a communication specialist with the Kentucky Housing Corporation in Franklin County, she finds herself in awe of the scenery. Outside of her job, Karri is an avid NPR listener, enjoys films at the Kentucky Theatre in Lexington, and cooking with friends.
Committing time to volunteer work has always been important to Karri. She has volunteered previously for Operation Read and the Carnegie Center's after-school tutoring program. She never expected to enjoy recording and reading live at CKRE so much. She's even starting to overcome her nervousness about public speaking a little! Karri says, "I have enjoyed every little bit of reading I've done - Kentucky Series pieces, health news, the Courier-Journal, AARP Bulletin, and the Lexington Herald-Leader. It's all relaxing and challenging at the same time, but I think I enjoy reading the news most of all. No matter what, I learn something every time I read.
Jewel Vanderhoef has been part of CKRE since before there was a CKRE. In 1989, Jewel read about the possible incorporation of a new Radio Reading Service, and called to find out more information. She ended up leaving a message for Al Crabb, asking if she had a "listenable voice." Al thought she did, and one year later, in 1990, CKRE and Jewel both hit the airwaves.
The difference between reading for oneself and reading for others was a "real discovery" for her - and two reading techniques she's developed are adjusting her voice to the mood of the writer or topic and picking up the vernacular of dialogue. Some of our listeners might have noticed Jewel doing these things during her reading of Bobbie Ann Mason's biography of Elvis Presley, which we aired in September. Jewel loves reading Mason out loud, as well as fellow Kentucky author Wendell Berry. Not only do both of these writers employ dialects in many of their works, but they also give the reader a sense of the history of the characters. A love of history and a strong sense of community involvement are two of Jewel's main interests, as shown by her prolific volunteering and her 20-year service to the Selective Service Board. Listen for Jewel during the Sunday Herald-Leader and also in an upcoming "Book Series" to be announced.
Congratulations to Paul Willis, who was recently honored for his 35 years of service at the University of Kentucky. As the former Director of Libraries, Mr. Willis was responsible for securing CKRE's on-campus studio space in the King Library. Without his help, CKRE quite literally would not be where it is today!
Do you know about all the services offered at the Lexington Senior Citizens Center? CKRE visited the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government website and learned some interesting information we would like to share with our listeners and friends.
The Center was designed to be a "one-stop" location for many different services for people aged 60 and over in Fayette County. CKRE learned about several of these, covering everything from employment and nutrition services to educational and social events.
Did you know the Center offers senior employment services within the public and private sectors, a retired and senior volunteer program (RSVP), a nursing home ombudsman agency, as well as an adult day healthcare program and several nutrition programs?
There are also many classes and meetings, such as those for Retired Federal Employees and Disabled American Veterans, and also an autobiography-writing class. The Center also offers assistance with understanding medical bills.
For more information on any of these programs offered by the Lexington Senior Citizens Center, you can call us here at CKRE at 257-2702, or contact the Center directly at 278-6072.
NEW HEALTH SERIES We are pleased to tell our listeners about an upcoming Health Series, Living Independently. The series will be read in seven episodes by CKRE volunteer Jack Wilson. It will be broadcast at 10 am Monday through Friday starting one week after this newsletter goes out in the mail. And as always, we will announce on the air the exact date the first episode begins.
MONEY SIDE We want to remind our listeners about the Money Side of CKRE that can be heard on Saturdays at 10:30 am. This program, hosted by Tom Dixon, gives straightforward and helpful financial information from various sources.
INTOUCH NETWORK CKRE is affiliated with the InTouch Network in New York. We access their programming from a satellite feed, and we wanted to draw listeners' attention to a great show produced by the InTouch Network. Our World is in the interest of those listeners with disabilities. It comes highly recommended, and you can hear Our World on CKRE on Wednesdays at 7 pm.
GROCERY SHOW This new half-hour program is already becoming popular with our listeners! Do you want to hear about weekly price specials from local stores such as Kroger, Meijer, Slone's, and Winn-Dixie? Tune in Mondays at 12 noon for the "chink of change" and the Grocery Show, hosted by Joan Grever. COMMUNITY UPDATE We would like to remind you about our new Monday feature: the "CKRE Community Update," full of information for you to add to your weekly schedule. Catch it at 9:30 am, every Monday, (on either CKRE radio or CKRE on Library Channel 20) within the reading of the Lexington Herald-Leader.
"AND, ALSO..." We here at CKRE would like to introduce the latest addition to our programming: "And, Also..." is a locally produced monthly show aimed at bringing to our listeners a variety of readings from various sources around the world. Emphasis will be given to news, information, and human interest stories about people living with a disability. "And Also..." will air the first Tuesday of each month at 10 am, so please join us then for some extra news from around your world.
We would like to tell you about an upcoming book in our "Book Series" to be broadcast on CKRE weekdays from 1 pm to 2 pm. Tuesdays with Morrie by the author Mitch Albom will be read by CKRE volunteer Tom Wilmes in four one-hour episodes. The broadcast of this great little book will begin one week after this newsletter goes out in the mail, and we will announce the exact date on the air.
We want to remind listeners that we routinely broadcast Public Service Announcements or CKRE Monday through Friday just before or after the reading of the Obituaries at 9 am.
We need several new readers and one soundboard operator. Training and orientation will be given, and if anyone would like to learn more about these volunteer opportunities please call us at 257-2702 or go to "Volunteer Opportunities."
We are also still searching for a sound engineer able to volunteer one or two hours of their time each month to help us maintain and repair simple broadcast equipment.
Here's a reminder that we always read our newsletter on the air. Be sure to tune into CKRE for the reading of this Fall Edition of "Radio Eye" at 10 am on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday one week after it arrives in your mailbox.
Central Kentucky Radio Eye welcomes some of our most recent listeners. If you have questions, problems, or need help please call us at 859-257-2702. We will be delighted to hear from you.
Office hours are Monday through Friday 8 am to 1 pm, and Saturdays and Sundays 9 am to noon.
During the week, our studio supervisor is Vanessa Oliver and our office manager is Joyce McGuire. On weekends, Tom Dixon and Al Crabb will take a message or answer questions.
Margaret Chase is our Executive Director, and from everyone here at CKRE we want to say hello and welcome to our new listeners:
GOODBYE AND THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR HELP
