When will UK give us X3? It's available now! See the UK Download site. Be sure to install the full version of X3. (Or download the quick install, then manually add APA 6th.) X3 features
First: make libraries, groups; edit them
- You can keep all your reference records in one big library
- Use groups to subdivide libraries
- You can make multiple libraries, too
- Customize: columns to display, order for sorting
Second: get your records
- either: import refs (export them from databases then import them to EndNote; often a database will make an executable file which opens EndNote; use EndNote browser toolbar to make direct export to EndNote Web)
- or: use EndNote to search the databases (connection)
- import filters
- connection files
- you can add records manually, too
Getting your records from EBSCOhost:
- add to Folder
- from Folder select
- Export
- Direct Export to EndNote (if you're on your desktop) or Direct Export to EndNote Web

- Output records
- Save to EndNote Web
- or Save to EndNote Desktop
- Export
- Click on file to get auto import to your desktop
- Mark your records

- Pick result format "Direct Export" then save
- yes! we do have an ID and PW for an EndNote connection file; ask me
- Export
- Download .ris file
- With MyJSTOR you can select records and export in batch
- Click on file to get auto import to your desktop or use EndNote Web to import it
Getting your records from ProQuest (coming soon... ProQuest/CSA will have a new interface in 2010)
Getting your records from Google Scholar :
- Scholar preferences: Bibliography Manager: show links to import citations into EndNote
- While you're there, be sure your preferences are set to show University of Kentucky Library Links, so you'll get "Get Text @ UK"
- for your reference Google Scholar doesn't give you much metadata
Getting your records from InfoKat:
- easy to connect and search!
- InfoKat doesn't make a friendly export file
Getting your records from WorldCat FirstSearch:
- WorldCat records do not have the InfoKat call number
- Make a marked list or a saved list / Of course, you can always export one record at a time
- I can't find a good import format for WorldCat Local records: best to stick with WorldCat FirstSearch
Third: apply output styles
- APA 6th ed!
- You can edit the style. Be very careful... if you mess up you can always reload a fresh copy of the style. Ask me for help.
- For example, at the moment, EndNote APA 6th style might be rendering the journal article vol. element in italics! You can make that regular. And it puts a space before the doi number. You can delete that. Don't want the display of [type of article]? Zap! Etc., etc.
- but you can't edit styles using the web version of EndNote
- Cite-while-you-Write in Microsoft Word, etc.
- It's tempting, but don't do it: if you want to edit your citation once it's in your Word document...
- (know that when you CWYW insert citation you do have the option of excluding the author or year and of adding a "prefix" (e.g., "drop everything and check ") or a "suffix" (e.g., page number) in the in-line citation)
- ... if you want to edit your citation... just delete it from your Word doc
- go back to EndNote and edit your citation or your output style
- then re-insert it into your Word doc
- More, more, more: Format a bibliography or make subject bibliographies. Annotate them!
Using EndNote to get full text of articles; URLs and tables, etc.
- insert/attach graphics and files
- you can attach multiple files to a reference; you can re-attach the same file to any number of references
- but you can attach only one figure per reference
- this stuff goes into your .DATA file, so be sure to move/copy it, if...
- Where do you want EndNote to place your figures? To fix it you can edit your output style, if need be. Watch it make your list -o- figures!
- "find full text" to add a URL or to obtain the .pdf: attached to your reference "while you clean your oven!"
- Edit your EndNote preferences to Enable OpenURL; use this path copy this link And add this URL for the authenticating: http://ezproxy.uky.edu
- replace text in references: "change text"
