Welcome to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Cultural Center Library
The University of Kentucky's Martin Luther King Jr. Cultural Center library has charged itself with the special mission of preserving knowledge in a variety of multicultural fields. It is the only satellite library on campus. It specializes in materials related to the historical, sociological, political and cultural aspects of the lives of African American people and serves to enhance patrons' understanding of the contributions of African Americans.
The MLKCC's Library presently contains more than 700 books and subscribes to more than 10 periodicals including popular magazines, scholarly journals, and newspapers. Periodical holdings include such titles as the, Ebony, Essence, Urban Latino, Journal of Black Psychology, and the Journal of Black Studies. Other materials in the collection are a portfolio of newspaper clippings and tape recordings of selected MLKCC programs and events. Unique to the collection are recordings of lectures and presentations by renowned scholars, poets, politicians, artists, and activists sponsored by the MLKCC. Recordings of presentations by such notables as Dr. Naim Akbar, Rev. Benjamin Muhammad, KRS ONE, Angela Davis, Kwame Toure, Haki Madhubuti and many others are held by the Black Cultural Center's library.
The library interior provides comfortable seating accommodations and easy access to the collection. Most volumes are on "open" stacks for direct access. Back issues of popular magazines, oversized books and books at high risk for loss are retained in "closed" stacks and can be attained by request.
The library serves to enhance the patron's knowledge of the African-American heritage by providing information which can be examined for academic research and/or personal growth. The MLKCC Library works in cooperation with the University of Kentucky's Young Library System and serves as a SATELLITE library. Its cataloged material is represented on
INFOKAT, the University Libraries' on-line catalog.
All University of Kentucky students, faculty and staff may borrow books and use the facilities of the MLKCC library. The public is encouraged to take advantage of the library's resources as well.
